The primary purpose of a record label is to grow existing artistes and to discover new ones.
We have good number of them in Nigeria now. The likes of Mavin Records, YBNL, DMW and others.
But today and right now, we are gonna be talking about one popular Nigerian artiste whose career varnished into oblivion after exiting his former record label. No any other person than,
Lil Kesh, is a Nigerian singer, rapper and songwriter. He used to one of the biggest and most influential artists in Nigeria and Africa at large.
👉🏾He rose to fame after releasing the hit single “Shoki”.
His versatility and musical style is similar to that of Olamide, who raps and sings in his local dialect.
But after leaving YBNL to create and manage his own label YAGI, dude literally disappeared is nowhere to be found in the industry.
On 26 Apr 2016, he made a post explaining his departure from YBNL via a post on his Instagram page. His words: “Ok, so it’s true that my contract ended about two weeks ago like we all know my contract with YBNL was for two years but that’s the business side to it”.
Though on a lengthy debate with a friend on this regard, he told me that Lil Kesh and the entirety of YAGI is a part of YBNL. That YBNL is one big umbrella that still oversees the activities of Lil Kesh as an artiste and YAGI as a record label. Olamide still plays an integral role in the career of the young man Lil Kesh.
But how true is that? Olamide still plays an integral role in the career of Lil Kesh for real? Lil Kesh and the entirety of YAGI is a part of YBNL for real?
If true, then why is the young man nowhere to be found in the industry? A guy who was one of the biggest and most influential artists in Nigeria and Africa, is now struggling to make a hit.
Just like Rekado Banks of Mavin Records. Ever since he left Mavin, dude is still struggling to stand tall. To a point he was mercilessly insulted and publicly embarrassed by Wizkid on Twitter.
Same thing with Iyanya the “Kukere” master. Dat one don kuku give up on music kpatakpata.🤣
Tiwa Savage is not left behind too. Ever since she left Mavin, the young lady is no longer making much waves in the industry.
BUT WAIT O..
Why is it that whenever a Nigerian artiste exit his or her former label, their music career crumble and stumble in most cases? Nobi juju be that photos president teageasm 70 year old man oo 😂😂🏃🏃🏃🏃
👉🏾Only Wizkid successfully scaled through and made big name for himself after leaving his former label.
Even Kizz Daniel after leaving G-worldwide I no come understand the young man again.
What about Adekunle Gold and several others. I drop pen here.
